His ancestors, the Quakers, went to Virginia from Berks County, Pennsylvania. If they are known, are descendants of Jacques and Jean, still in Virginia. Isaac went to a place near where joining Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and his descendants are in this region. Thomas came to Kentucky, and after many years, died there, where his descendants went to Missouri. Abraham, the grandfather of the subject of this sketch, came to Kentucky and was killed by Indians about the year 1784. He left a widow, three daughters and son. The eldest son, Mordecai, Kentucky, remained until late in life, if he lives in Hancock County, Illinois, where he soon died, and where some of his descendants still. The second son, Josiah, in his debut, was removed to a place on Blue River, now in Hancock County, Indiana, but no recent information obtained by him or his family. The eldest sister, Mary, married Ralph Crume and some of their descendants are now known to be in Breckenridge County, Kentucky. The second sister, Nancy, married William Brumfield, and her family are not known to have left Kentucky, but there is no recent information provided by them. Thomas, the youngest son and the father of the current topic by the early death of his father, and very narrow circumstances of his mother in his childhood was an itinerant worker-boy and grew up literally without education. It has never been more in the way of writing like writing his name awkwardly. Before he was grown, he has years as a farmhand at his uncle Isaac on Watauga, a branch of the Holston River. To return to Kentucky and met her twenty eighth year, he married Nancy Hanks – mother of the present subject – in 1806. She was born in Virginia, and relatives of the name of Hanks and other names, now reside in Coles, in Macon, and Adams counties, Illinois and Iowa.
